Malestroit - The Laws of 1902

Then came the Laws of 1902 against the teaching congregations in France. Will the small boarding school, opened in 1867, oblige the sisters to move a third time? The Mother Superior went to England, but, because of a lack of money, dreams close to becoming true at Portsmouth vanished. And when the list of banned establishments was published, Malestroit doesn’t appear.

However, wouldn’t it be wiser to abandon teaching and return to caring for the sick? In order to satisfy the exigencies of the day, the sisters had to obtain diplomas for nursing. Some of them went to the Monastery in Rennes where the women of the Red Cross had organized courses.

The building occupied by boarders was changed into rooms. Little by little, with the help of a young doctor, the idea of «a kind of health facility» was developped.
